Kanaa

2018, Tamil, Zee5, 7.8/10 IMBD, Directed by Arunraja Kamaraja

A sugar coated attempt in throwing light on the sad Plight of Indian farmers, in the name of ‘love for cricket’, with series of subliminal cliché, only saved by the women centric phenomena.

A maiden production venture by actor Shivakarthkeyan, with Kumara Raja as a debuant director, with Sathyaraj playing the lead role with Aishwarya Rajesh in a father daughter duo. Sounds interesting and it does shine through in bits and peices.

In the era of rat race competition where kids are forced to pursue their parent’s dream, here the concept is spun around the irony of a daughter aspiring to become a cricket star for her dad’s love for the game. A thumbs up to the team for this very thought.

The film travels with a weird one sided love angle which is naive and ancient but what is new is the boy loves her, for her love for cricket. Another thumbs up for the concept. The song sequence was a spoil sort though.

Sathyaraj has a meaty role and he as usual contributes more to hold the movie high. His combo with Illavarasu, were heart warming to watch.

Aishwarya has done a commendable job, except the stern face expression seems flat resulting in lack of grip on the audience to emote with her parallelly..

Sivakarthikeyan, as the coach was a sheer let down. Madhavan had set a high benchmark in irudhi suttru, and Shiva fails to even attempt a performance like that. The needed mileage to transport the movie to masses was accomplished, but his expressions were plastic and sometimes it gets on your nerves.

The debut director Arunraja strikes a bronze this time and needs to horne his skills to strike gold in his next outing.

The farmers plight addressed nationally does have its edge but as the boxing movie ‘irudhi suttru’ and the then athelitic movie ‘Ashwini’ flashes upon your inward eye making this attempt worth a watch only because of the girl power factor and the Sathyaraj’s weird passion for cricket and farming.

Good attempt..
