2019, Tamil, 6.9/10 IMDB, Directed by Ken Scott
An uninterestingly shot uncogent story, solely riding on Dhanush’s acting ability for which there isn’t much opportunity in the screenplay.
Is it a story on the hardship of immigrant refugee? Is it a fantasy story? Is it a story for children? Is it a story of lovers? Is it a quest story for the hero’s dad? Is it a musical story? Is it a preachy movie of the gyan of giving? Is it a fairy tale kind bedtime? Is it a rehabilitative therapy for detained petty crime juveniles?
It’s aspiring to achieve all of the above but not accomplishing any of it with an impact to reach out the audience.
The story is based on a 2013 debut french novel by Romain Puertolas tittled ‘The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir who got trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe’. The title explains it all, but the adapated screenplay is kinda superficial and character lacks in depth.
Hearty Singh, the child artist playing the young Dhanush just sweeps you off the floor with his charming eye lashes and expressive self.
Wonder what the raving was all about the standing ovation in France. There weren’t one such evoking scene that connects with the audience. Such a shame Dhanush’s potentials never surfaces through out. Maybe the actor has set the bar too high that we often see him fall short.
He just captures the audience with his magnetic voice in the clubby number, Maya bazaaru and his kollywood moves does make you shake a leg..
Baby stepped foray into the international acting grounds sure would have hone Dhanush’s mastery for the craft. Behind the scene bloopers with his international crew vouch for the confidence and acclaim the actor has gained globally.
It’s a true proud parent moment to see our conventional home-state pan star, shine through globally. May be he might be approached with more challenging work in near future.
