Petta

2019, Tamil, Netflix, 7.2/10 IMDB, Directed by Karthik Subbaraj

A wicked movie OF THE Rajini fans FOR THE Rajini fans BY THE Rajini fans. The lion has been unleashed and let loose to rule back the jungle. God bless Director Karthik for leaving us contented as the curtain draws down on the Rajini Era.

Where on earth do we get to watch the festivity of bulk booking and ganging up with friends and families and corporate friends. It can only happen in a super star Rajinikanth’s flick..

Sincere thanks to all those who wanted to see Rajini in an art movie with more scope for acting and for him to play his age.. Now we know what we loved all these years about rajini and how much we missed seeing our kind of thalaivar of the masses on screen for so long.

We evidently realise where the root lies from which today’s Vijays and Shivas are mushrooming. They better watch out because nothing can beat the original. We rajini fans were left pointing out and claiming copyright for punches and style quotients and walks and glass twists and the charisma on the whole, now we take pride for our Thailavar was the pioneer.

There can only be one Bhasha of style and it’s HIM and him only.

Karthik subbaraj took a paper and jotted down the favorite moments in all rajini movies, the artist who could emote earthily, the lead that he would love to see his thalaivar on screen with, the daring stunt sequences he was awe struck with, the childish dialogue deliveries we adored rajini for. He then spun a flawless screen play with an engaging hometown Madurai plot and what we have is a class apart super entertaining revision of rajinism..

The rajathiraja song ‘silu siluvena’ and kodi parakudhu Assistant Commisioner character with Amala, had a rajini that we fell in love with. Here we have an entire 1st half to relish and fall in love with him all over again.

The mass entertainer classics Bhasha and Padaiappa and Arunachalam for which we stood by him, were all beautifully recaped in the second half.

The characters played opposite him were tailor made for the part and they fit in aptly. What was missed in Mani Rathnam’s chekka chivandha vaanam was casually achieved here with flair. Kudos karthik for unleashing and shaking the rust off the darling of the masses and reassuring that HE is irreplaceable.

The dialogues make thalaivar communicate to the masses directly via silver screen as he always did.

Thalaivar’s dance moves were phenomenal and straight away quenches the fans thirst for seeing him do it with a signature sway.

The cigarette scene with a statutory personal experience warning was a punch in the face for the political parties who made polictics with that.

VJS simply couldn’t wipe off the fan moment smile on his face thoughout and that’s the magic of super star.

Simran just conquers you back in a jiffy and kudos karthik for casting her in a role that we wanted for her come back.

Now, what do I say about nawazudin? The guy is a charmer and his trademark emotions in couple of scenes like those of the ‘sacred games’ Gaitonde character, were just enough to power play his worth against the super star.

Anirudh’s music does magic to the movie. The songs work wonders. With familiar rajini BGMs sprinkled all over it’s a treat for rajini fans.

The interval block in dark backdrop where rajini lifts one eye brow, reminds you of the acting skills the actor is known for stealing our hearts. The climax is an adrenaline pumping mad rush with an awesome twist and the Raman aandalum dance, OMG, that’s a sheer fan boy moment.

If this is the curtain fall on the era of rajinism, I leave content and will add this to my library of rajini movies and cherish till I watch it with my grand kids to see the same kind response I saw in my daughter’s eyes when she was a baby.
